Adult ADD: Remembering To Remember
When you have adult ADD, it's not surprising that your memory is faulty. When you remember certain events or places, you might get a bit creative, let's say. Or, you'll be physically attending and mentally elsewhere. You may not remember things people did or what they said, or even places you've been until someone gives you just the right verbal cue and then, whatever it is you're to remember comes into view. None of this is unusual for people with adult ADD.
Yet, forgetting things may make you uncomfortable. If you can't remember your minister's name all of a sudden, for instance, or forgetting a doctor's appointment could be embarrassing. Consider that it may lie in the fact that because you have adult ADD you're generally looking ahead, rather than looking backward.
There are times when forgetting can be a self-defense mechanism. You may want to forget unpleasant experiences, and then, a faulty memory can be a blessing. But what happens most often is that adult ADD has you thinking about so many things at the same time that you can't remember the small details, even if they're important.
Give yourself some leeway to forget unimportant details. They're just not worth worrying about. But for the really important things, you do have some options.
Take a memory course, for instance. One that really helped me is called "Mega Memory" and it's by Kevin Trudell. I saw it on an infomercial, and guess what? It really works! The whole thing is that you really have to make a conscious effort to employ the techniques you learn, regardless of what course you take.
Here's the deal... If you're successful and have no real problem with forgetting, that's great. But even if you do have memory issues, realize that everyone forgets things now and then, even if they don't have adult ADD. If it's a problem, use a day planner and keep it with you all the time. Or, use sticky notes and put them all over your desk, if you need to. But when you write things down, you're doing yourself a favor. Now, you don't have to remember because what you need to remember is right there in front of you making it impossible for you to forget.
