Troubleshooting A Car Windshield Washer Pump

The following ten steps can guide in finding out why the windshield-washer fluid is not easily flowing. This short guide will soon help one to drive again with clean windows. A disconnected pipe or dirt in the spray nozzle can be the simple problems.

Following are the steps;
Step 1
First, the windshield washer must be turned on with the engine off and the key in the ‘on’ position.

Step 2
A humming sound can make one determine if the motor of the windshield washer is operative. The bonnet has to be opened and someone can be asked to listen to the sound while the windshield washer is turned on. The fuses would have to be checked if any sound is not heard.

Step 3
The fuse would have to be replaced if it is blown. If it is not and the motor is silent, then the mechanic would have to replace the motor of the windshield washer. If the humming of the motor is heard, proceed ahead.

Step 4
The reservoir has to checked, windshield-washer fluid has to be added if its level is low or empty. The reservoir can be fully filled right to the top as it usually does not have any full or empty indicators. It is better to use funnel for avoiding spills.

Step 5
The water in the reservoir should be checked if it is not frozen. It can only happen in cold weathers if the reservoir is filled with plain water instead of windshield washer fluid.
Step 6
The small rubber pipe that connects into the windshield washer reservoir has to be attached.

Step 7
The pipe can be followed to the rear of the bonnet. Any crimps, torn or broken lines must be checked. The line coming from the reservoir splits into further two lines at the bonnet. The line should be removed it damaged. It can be brought to an auto store for purchasing an identical one and leaks must also be checked.

Step 8
Any debris should be cleared from the area around the nozzle of the washer fluid present on top of the bonnet.

Step 9
The passage of the washer fluid nozzle can be cleared with the help of a pin or a needle.

Step 10
The washer lines at the reservoir and at the bonnet should be unhooked, compressed air can be blown through the lines to clear anything stuck in them.
