Purpose of Life

 

                 I

                                                      
         Like all the others stars of the Universe, the sun, the star nearest to us and the protector of life on the earth, is one day going to die. Although there is a possibility of total destruction of life on the earth due to the death of the sun, as no light and heat will be available, yet life will be destroyed much earlier to this phenomenon. Directly speaking, the protector, i.e., the sun itself will not only destroy life on the earth but also convert the earth into gases and vapors. As one fraction of scientists predicts, this will happen in the following manner: 

          As a result of nuclear reactions that convert hydrogen into helium, which has been taking place in the core of the sun, energy is released in the form of light and heat. Life on the earth is totally dependable on it as there is no other source of energy for the earth. The reserve of hydrogen in the sun’s core is limited and is getting decreased every moment. At one time the decrease of hydrogen to a certain level will create such a condition that the inward pressure of the layers surrounding the core will exceed the outward pressure of the core (at present the outward and inward pressures are balanced). To balance the pressures, the rate of nuclear reactions will get increased. As a result, more heat will be generated in the sun. The sun will be getting hotter and hotter. At one time the sun will be so hot that it will burn all the animals and plants on the earth into ashes and convert the nonliving things into gases and vapors. Due to the increased heat, the size of the sun will get expanded too. The sun will be expanded to such an extent that its circumference will go beyond the orbit of the earth. That is, the sun will eat the inner planets (Mercury and Venus). Most probably the sun will eat the earth too, although the scientists have different opinions on it. One fraction of scientists believe that all the hydrogen in the sun’s core will be burnt out before the eating of the earth, as a result, the sun will start to shrink and thus the earth will be saved. But even if the earth is going to be saved from the mouth of the sun, it will never be suitable for creation of life again. Gradually the sun will lose all its capacity of generating energy and will end up as white dwarf. Most probably supernova explosion will not occur in the sun, for such explosion takes place in stars much bigger than the sun.           These days people all over the globe are becoming concerned about the felling of trees, emission of greenhouse gases etc, for temperature of the earth is increased by these factors. Increased temperature of the earth is dangerous for the existence of life. But the paradox is that one day the sun itself is going to increase the temperature of the earth !                                                            
                                                            II  

          Most probably life appeared on earth by accident, that is, it was not the result of a ‘much thought plan of somebody’. As it is seen, the consequence of life on earth is its total destruction, and total destruction should not be the part of a ‘much thought plan’. Life on the earth appeared spontaneously, that is, nobody created it. That is why living beings must survive on the earth on their own capacity. But, as we know, living beings are the most helpless things in the Nature. Even the human species, which owned the most developed brain and is equipped with the power of science and technology, is too helpless in front of the Nature. Human species, the most intelligent and powerful creature among the living beings on the earth, has developed nuclear weapons capable of destructing the world for several times, but remained, at least still remained, incapable of protecting its own existence!                                                          
                                                             III 

          In the beginning, the expedition to the Space and research on it was used to show one’s supremacy on others, or was used to threaten the weak and the opponent. Now-a-days the purpose of Space research and expedition is totally different. Protection of life, especially the protection of human species in the Universe, is now the main purpose of such researches and expeditions. And the human species can save itself in the Universe only by escaping from the earth, that is, by establishing settlement on some earth-like planet. It means, to protect their own existence the living beings will have to escape from the earth --- the creator and the protector of life ! That is why the space scientists are now in search of an earth-like planet in the Universe, that is, planet having oxygen, water, similar temperature etc as on the earth. They are also examining the possibilities of using the Moon or the Mars as the ‘transit station’ for reaching the earth-like planet. There is no guarantee that the earth-like planet will have the same environment as on the earth; it may be hotter, or there may be less oxygen. Therefore man may have to carry out some genetic changes in him to adjust him in the different environment of the earth-like planet. On the other hand, for his own survival, man has to carry at least some species of other living beings with him to the earth-like planet, as the living beings on the earth are dependable on each other. In that context, discovery of the mysteries of the Universe is also essential, for it will lead to the proper course of action in reaching the earth-like planet. Possibly, man will be able to reach an earth-like planet in future and establish settlement there. But the paradox is that, this earth-like planet is too going to be converted into gases and vapors on one day, for the star, the supplier of energy to this planet, is one day going to die! And man will have to again escape to another earth-like planet. Thus human will be able to survive on the Universe only by escaping from one planet to another!

          What is then the purpose of life? In one sense, it is purposeless. Life appeared on earth spontaneously and by accident. There may be a cause of the accident, but there should not be any purpose.           Purpose of life may be one, --- to survive on the Universe. That is, to think and work for the survival of human species on the Universe is the purpose of our life. But man can achieve this aim only when he leads a peaceful, harmonious and prosperous life. Man can not think and work properly for existence of life on the Universe living in  wars and disturbances, poverty and unhygienic conditions, ignorance and superstitions.

          To lead a peaceful, harmonious and prosperous life, man needs the help of his beautiful and marvelous inventions like music and dance, arts and literature, paintings and sculptures, for these things bring peace to his mind. Only a mentally peaceful man living in a peaceful society will be able to think and work for reaching an earth-like planet. That is why man should avoid deceit and hypocrisy, falsehood and dishonesty, jealousy and unfriendliness, revenge and corruption, oppression and torture, superstition and fanaticism, conceit and arrogance, and all other evil thinking as well as mentality, for these create hindrance in establishing peaceful and harmonious environment in the society. Neglect and deprivation, oppression and torture, deceit and hypocrisy etc help in creating an environment of war and disturbances. Man should try to create an environment of equality and brotherhood, for only in such environment man will be able to achieve his goal of surviving himself in the Universe.             Like music and dance, arts and literature, painting and sculpture, possibly religion too brings peace to mind, but the fanaticism, the conflict and the collision, even the unhesitating mentality of killing the followers of other religions running in the society in the name of religion do not support this opinion. On the other hand, messages and teachings of religions are not capable of maintaining the existence of man in the Universe.           Knowledge of science and technology and only the knowledge of science and technology can save the existence of human species in the Universe.
