Philadelphia Eagles Tickets - Quarterback Questions
The Philadelphia Eagles have three quarterbacks that could potentially be starting-caliber signal callers. This is a good kind of problem to have, but not one that should be ignored. Carrying three quarterbacks that are capable of starting in this league doesn't make sense, so the Eagles would be wise to move at least one of them. The question is which guy to move. Let's take a look at their options.
Donovan McNabb: McNabb has been the starter in Philadelphia for a long time now, but he's never really found his way into the hearts of most Eagles fans. Still, if the Eagles think that they can contend for a Super Bowl this season, McNabb gives them the best chance to do so. He's not the mobile quarterback that he used to be, but has become a solid pocket passer that can get the ball downfield. His contract is up at the end of the 2010 season, though, which will have to factor into the team's decision.
Michael Vick: Vick got on the field in certain situations last season, but didn't tear it up by any means. He's still getting used to playing again, but there would most certainly be interest from other teams if the Eagles were to shop him. Philadelphia owes Vick more than $7 million this season. Is it really wise for the team to keep a backup, or even a third stringer, at that price?
Kevin Kolb: Kolb was the team's second-round pick a couple of years ago. He struggled mightily when given some playing time in his rookie season, but looked really good early in 2009 when McNabb missed time with an injury. A lot of people in Philadelphia are calling for the Kevin Kolb era, but his limited experience makes it a big risk to thrust him into a starting role.
Regardless of which of these three players is selling Philadelphia Eagles tickets from under center next season, I think the team will be solid, but not on the upper echelon of clubs in the NFC. McNabb gives them the best chance to win this season, but the Eagles could get some value for him if they traded him this offseason as opposed to losing him to free agency next offseason. That's definitely a conundrum, so one has to take a look at the overall state of the offense.
This is a young offense, one that boasts a talented running back in LeSean McCoy and a pair of dynamic wideouts in DeSean Jackson and Jeremy Maclin. All three of those guys were drafted in the past two years, and Kolb figures to be the future at quarterback regardless of who starts in 2010. When considering this, I think Kolb becomes the last guy you'd want to trade. He's unproven, but he's shown a lot of promise and the coaching staff seems to really like him.
That leaves either McNabb or Vick to be traded. Both players have contracts that expire after the 2010 season, and both have some value throughout the NFL. McNabb has greater value, though, so I'd lean toward trading him. Philadelphia could surely get a second round pick in exchange for the former Syracuse standout; they might even be able to land a first-rounder for the quarterback. Shipping McNabb would also usher in the Kolb era and get him on the field, providing the young signal caller with valuable experience to move forward with.
So when considering the state of the offense, the team's chances in 2010, each player's trade value and the direction of the organization, it seems to me that the best option would be to trade McNabb, make Kolb the starter and use Vick as the backup. It might hurt their 2010 record a bit, but I think it's a much better move for the franchise from a long-term standpoint.
