MLB - Red Sox Embarrassed the Yankees with a Three-Game Sweep
The 7-time World Series champions and current second place of the AL East, the Boston Red Sox, swept their stronger rivals, the New York Yankees, in three games and won the last game with a score of 4-1 this past Sunday. The Yankees couldn’t compare with the Red Sox’s bullpen efficiency, which was superior in all three games of the series. During Friday and Saturday’s games, the Yankees were up for a few innings but were surpassed by several great plays made by the Red Sox, who took advantage of the Yankees’ mistakes.
In the first game the Yankees were up 4-2 in the seventh inning, but a bad pitch from Mariano Rivera in the ninth inning against Jason Bay - who scored a home run – tied the Yankees at 4-4. In the 10th inning neither of the teams scored, but in the 11th inning a walk-off solo homer onto Lansdowne Street by Kevin Youkilis gave the victory to the Red Sox 5-4.
In the second game, during the first three innings, things seemed positive for the Yankees, who were up 4-0. But then the Boston Red Sox scored in each of the following six innings. The teams seemed to be tied until the seventh inning, when Mike Howell hit a three-run homer; then, in the eighth inning, Boston scored 4 runs, giving the victory again to the Red Sox, 16-11.
With nine consecutive victories and two successive ones against the Yankees, the Red Sox looked more confident and had even more motivation against their perpetual rivals. In the third game, the Yankees were already losing the game 2-1 by the fifth inning. Then an amazing play by Red Sox player Jacoby Ellsbury, in which he stole home right in front of Yankees’ pitcher Andy Pettite, gave a three-to-one lead to Boston. In the same inning, Drew quickly drilled a ground-rule double into the corner, and the Red Sox finished with a victory of 4-1. But the most dramatic and exciting play in the game was Ellsbury’s steal, a play not often seen in baseball history.
After the game, left fielder Jason Bay expressed his satisfaction over his teammates’ performances, and even though he knew it was not an easy winning weekend, he stated that the wins reflected team effort and that winning against their eternal rivals was amazing.
"It was not the most direct route to win those games, but ultimately it came against a huge rival in the division. We came in with the same record [as the Yankees].There's a lot of positives, not just because it's the Yankees, which is a big plus, but we want to keep playing well," Bay explained.
After a bad start of 2-6 to an astounding current 12-6 record and a 10th consecutive win, the Boston Red Sox will start this April 27th a three-game road series with Cleveland. The Yankees will have a three-game series against the Tigers.
