Pet Life Jackets: Fashion Forward and Safe!

There is a common misconception that all dogs are excellent swimmers, but this definitely not true. There are many breeds that do not enjoy water at all, and even “water dogs” such as a lab can falter in waves and undertows. An excited dog can over do it and experience crippling fatigue. Some people may view pet life jackets as an accessory or cute outfit, but if you plan on having your dog near water this summer you should consider it a necessity.  Pet life jackets usually buckle underneath the dog and around the neck, which puts the flotation on the dog’s back or ribs, and most also feature a handle on the back so the dog can easily be lifted from the water.

You should always bring your dog with you when shopping as size and fit will vary and keep in mind that there are no regulations on life jackets. Life jackets come in many colors and patterns so it should be easy to find one to fit your dog’s personality and style. Always make certain that your dog will not slip out of the vest while in the water and, just as importantly, make sure that it is not too tight as well, as this could impair your dog’s ability to swim well. Make sure to check the length of the straps and where they make contact with your dog’s body. If your dog’s straps are too long you may want to shorten them so that they don’t snag on anything while your dog is swimming.  If visibility is important to you, try to choose one that is brightly colored to make them more visible.

Even the best swimmer can run into problems in the water, so it’s best to play it safe when it comes to your furry friend. If you are planning on bringing your dog along with you to the lake or beach, you should consider investing in a dog life jacket!
