What To Know About The Carol M. White Pep Grant

Every year, the Carol M. White Physical Education Program (PEP) gives out millions of dollars in grant money to schools and community organizations to help them implement and enhance their physical education programs. The PEP Grant is designed for programs in K through 12 grades, and faith-based organizations are eligible. Individual schools and organizations can receive anywhere from $100,000 to $500,000.

Eligibility
In order to be eligible for the Carol M. White PEP Grant, schools and organizations must show that they have developed and implemented (or are in the process of implementing) a physical education program that meets state requirements and does at least one of the following:

• Provide fitness assessments and teach students how to maintain physical fitness.
• Provide students with opportunities for learning and developing cooperation skills as well as social skill through physical activities.
• Provide motor skills instruction that encourages social and mental development.
• Give physical fitness instructors the opportunity for career development and for keeping up to date with the latest research and development in their field.
• Provide education with regards to healthy eating and nutrition.
• Provide instruction in cognitive concepts relating to physical fitness.

Changes in Federal Budget and the PEP Grant Program
The current administration is in the process of passing a new budget for the fiscal year of 2011 that would result in the consolidation of 38 educational programs, including the PEP Grant, into 11 separate authorities. The move would be an attempt at streamlining the U.S. Department of Education. How would the new budget, if passed, affect the Carol M. White PEP Grant?

Under the new USDE, the Carol M. White PEP Grant would be consolidated with five other programs into a single authority called "Successful, Safe and Healthy Students". This new body would have a total budget of $410 million, which is more than what the individual programs combined currently have.
