Adding wood biomass to fuel stream

A large coal-burning power plant that wanted to add wood biomass to the coal fuel stream contacted Imperial Systems to help them with their new project in New York state. The challenge was to pneumatically convey the wood bio fuel that was being generated from two Schutte Buffalo hammermills and capture any airborne emissions at the same time.

The hammermills were to produce 15 tons/hr each of 2” minus sized product through a 5/16” screen. The moisture content was 20-30 percent at 10-20 lbs/ft3 density. The concerns with this type of material is conveying without plugging and abrasion.

The project started with Imperial Systems’s engineering team, who used state of the art 3-D modeling to design the system and assure the accuracy of the equipment. Once the system was designed to meet the needs of the customer, the project was handed over to manufacturing where the entire system was built at the Imperial plant in Jackson Center, Pa.

Baghouse installations

Imperial selected the model 13-416BRF-12 baghouse that is conservatively sized at 5:1 air to cloth ratio. In most cases Imperial would have selected the baghouses based on an 8:1 air to cloth ratio, but the customer was happy with the conservative selection. The cyclones were used to capture 100 percent of the material on particles larger than 50 micron. Any particles that pass through the cyclones will be captured by the baghouses.

The CFM required to evacuate the material from the hammermills was 64,000 CFM at 6” water column. By using air to evacuate the hammermills, the throughput is increased by 30-40 percent, versus a non-evacuated mill.

Imperial Systems equipment meets NFPA guidelines by using proper extinguishers and rupture panels from relieving a potential explosion.
