Keep Shoppers and Their Children Coming Back when Starting a Dollar Store

Those starting a dollar store often fail to comprehend the immense potential for dollar store sales party goods provides.  Sure they see the consistent sales and the superior dollar store profits earned from the sale of much of the dollar store merchandise.  They reorder as this dollar store merchandise sells.  Once in awhile they even add new items to the mix.  However they never go out of their way to build sales from this department.  Don’t make the same mistake.  Both your dollar store sale levels and your dollar store profits will benefit from focused buying and promotion of party goods.

When starting a dollar store simple actions like offering a good selection of wedding favors and supplies, carrying a wide selection of gift bags and gift wrap, and always have the most popular greeting cards in-stock will solidify your sales.  But don’t stop there.  Look for opportunities to grow your sales even further.  Add party supplies for every major holiday and event.  But that still isn’t enough.  Build sales even higher by getting creative with your merchandising.

One great example is proving everything required for your customers to hold theme parties.  This will not only build dollar store sales and dollar store profits for your party department.  Properly promoted, you will see sales of toys and other dollar store merchandise grow as well.  Here are just a few examples of different children party themes and the items you might add to build sales when starting a dollar store:   

1.  Luau – In addition to party plates, cups, napkins and table covers, leis, flowers for hair, hula hoops and other items will all sell.   

2. Swimming or water play themes – Be sure to stock up on water balloons, water guns, floaties for the smaller children and other water play merchandise.   

3. Baseball - Display plastic bats, balls, caps, team banners and flags and more.  Don’t forget the black out for under the eyes.  Repeat the same thing football season, basketball season, and soccer season.  The list of potential items for these events is limitless.  

4. Make up party – Let the fun and fashion begin! Displays should include fingernail polish, lip stick/gloss, fake nails, blush, and eye shadow.   

5. Zoo theme or animal theme – Kids love animals! Display plastic farm animals or African type plastic animals. Don’t forget there could also be cups and plates with the colors or theme.  Add cowboy hats and even more.

6. Hat theme – Kids and parents are always on the lookout for hats and helmets.  Start with baseball hats, fireman hats, policeman hats, princess hats/crowns, and then build your selection from there.

7. Princess theme - Magic wands, crowns, white gloves, jewelry, high heels and more.

8. Magic theme – Once again magic wands are a winner here.  Then add magic cards, capes, magic trick books, and magic tricks.

The possibilities are limited only by your imagination.  It is easy to develop a theme of the month for the kids.  You will see the children and their parents coming back time and again for the themed dollar store merchandise they saw during their last visit.  Only the return visit is to make purchases.  Watch your dollar store sale levels and dollar store profits grow from this one idea.
